I wanted to share some thoughts about food storage for a pretty fridgescape. One of the best things about this process is that anything goes. It’s about creatively storing your food and beautifying your space, so all that matters is that you love looking at it daily and it’s functional for you. Seriously consider what you will and won’t eat in a timely manner. Don’t go the berry basket route if you know you’ll take two weeks to eat your berries. That’s a quick way to waste fruit. You either need to know you’ll eat it soon or be prepared to use it in some way when it becomes too ripe, like making jam. If you’re unsure about timing, start by displaying things that last a long while in the open. Some personal favorites are artichokes, cherries, apples, grapes and fruits with a skin like dragonfruit or pineapple. Apples are ethylene producers, so keep that in mind when you choose what they live with. I like to keep them in a basket with artichokes because they’re not ethylene sensitive. Anything that can be kept in water is a huge win. Asparagus is a fantastic option for this as well as celery or fennel fronds. Most herbs also do well in water and look very pretty and of course flowers. I try to use flowers I actually use in cooking like violets, lavender, sweet William, rose, chamomile, etc. Just be sure nothing toxic is in there like foxglove, hydrangea, daffodils, etc. And always be sure that if you use an older vase or jar to store these things that you’ve lead tested. As far as sealed containers go, I like to buy pretty ones I enjoy looking at, like my glass ones with bamboo lids. I also have some big bowls I throw a cover over for leafy greens. Things like lettuce I only leave out (even in the crisper) if I know I’ll be eating it within a day. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way. 😂 Also, anything you need to give a longer shelf life because it’s further out in your meal plan. For the crisper it varies depending on my weekly meal plan, but I like to use a basket to give it a little something. A Hobbit refrigerator has been my most requested fridgescape theme ever, so I went on a quest to tackle it. I’ve honesty been very nervous because I really wanted to do it justice for everyone. I was heavily influenced by Bilbo Baggins’ kitchen in The Hobbit right down to the doilies! This was also very similar in a lot of ways to Outlander with the very primitive style dishware and fresh herbs and plethora of textures. It was very fun to create as I’m currently vibing the natural texture in the refrigerator. I wish I had been recording, but when Dave opened the refrigerator he was so excited. It’s his favorite one yet. I love getting his refrigerator stamp of approval. 😭😭 Side note: the bread was eaten for dinner.
